Question:

What's wrong with my toilet?

OK. For some reason when I try to flush the toilet it just fills up the bowl (doesn't overflow) then drains down slowly and nothing in the bowl goes away. There was a piece of plastic stuck in the toilet just before the main drain in the floor. I removed the bowl, cleaned the blockage out and reinstalled the bowl with a new wax ring. While I had the bowl off the floor I filled it with the shower and flushed it in the tub and it worked perfectly. Any ideas?

Thanks,

  1. Did you put something in the hole to stop the sewer gases when you removed the toilet???

  2. Idk, maybe a blockage further down?

  3. When you reset your toilet you may have caught part of the wax ring and it is partially clogging the drain. It happened to me.

  4. Check the vent pipe that runs up through the roof. If it is clogged the water will drain slowly.

  5. Reading your post it almost has to be a venting problem. I assume that when you had the bowl off and in the tub when it flushed fine that the larger flush starter hole in the bottom side of the toilet bowl was not plugged. I had this same problem and we finally tracked it down to a tight door and a strong vent fan. This made the room be at just a slightly less air pressure than the vents and would not let the bowl empty. Was there a strong draft back in the room from the main line when you had the toilet off? It may also be caused by a blocked vent stack and a low spot in the sewerline. The way to test this is go up on the roof and run some water down the vent line. Or just run some water in the house and see if you can hear the running water at the vent on the roof. Hope this helps.

  6. same thing happend to me. get a jug, fill it with hot water and poor it into the bowl let it drain..do it about 3 times.
