What's wrong with my windows startup repair?

Question

Well my computer wasn't booting up properly so I decided to do the start up repair from the vista cd. In the last 2 days it's been running, nothing has changed and no progress has been made. It's been on the attempting repairs screen forever. It isn't letting me cancel it either, it says the current operation cannot be canceled. I'm growing slightly impatient :P Should I power off my computer with the button and try again? Would there be any side effects from that? thanks

i would do that but i won't advice it unless you know how to reinstall everything from scratch.
