Why won't our new ceiling fan turn?

We bought a ceiling fan with light to replace a fixture that had been there since the 40s. The light goes on but hums, the motor won't turn and hums also. Our wattage is 110... does it need 120? We can run a 120 line to it because we split our 240 line. It's in an old cabin built in1932. Another thing, when we used the breaker to install it and turned off the electricity at the wall switch as well, we still got a beep from the tester at the ceiling box but we didn't get shocked. What could that mean?

  1. your getting feed back, there is  a wire crossed some where in that section,

if your not sure of what your doing i would bite the bullet and call an electrician,

110v is the same as 120v

  2. I suspect you have a loose connection in the ceiling connection box. More than likely the white (neutral) wire has come loose to the fan.  The beep tester you used is one very dangerous indicator for true voltage in a circuit. It will give a false positive for voltage present and cause many erroneous readings.  There is no difference for the lights or fan of 110 or 120 volts in your circuit, both are nominal voltages that are used interchangeably in the trade.   There is a possibility that your neutral is looose or the grounding to the buss is loose.

  3. Starting at the top. It seems like there is a voltage problem here. Are you sure that you have 110 VOLTS ? It really sounds like a qualified electrician should take a look directly at this rather than a bunch of guessing. After all the cabin has been up since the thirties, why burn it down from this problem.

  4. I don't believe you got the wiring correct. Voltage of 110 or 120 is a moot point. If you are still sensing power after the electricity is turned off, I would suggest calling someone with electrical experience. You may burn up the motor on the fan.

  5. Sounds like you have a bad or loose conection....
