Question:

What's wrong with the peaches on my tree?

I have a peach tree in my backyard. In previous years, I get delicious peaches, but this summer I'm finding that the peaches are unusually large but not ripened. Birds would normally eat the peaches leaving nothing but the pits, now the birds are leaving barely eaten peaches. It's like the birds won't even eat them now! There are no warts or strange bumps or lesions on them. They just taste terrible.

I live in southern California. I've tried researching this online, but I can't find any site that addresses this particular problem. Any ideas on what the problem might be, or a good site to visit that may address this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx!

  1. add lyme to your soil around trees.............they have the "blight" .....................caused by poor PH in soil

  2. PlanetK, I work for the Arizona extension office and we get calls from home gardeners about their peaches.  It seems that lately the questions are either about why the (white) peach trees have no fruit (we had a killer late frost in March) or why the peaches taste bitter.  Even a late frost can cause a bitter taste in the peaches.

In other fruits there's often a vitamin deficiency that can lead to bitter fruit, or perhaps a virus that is making the sugars inside the fruit go haywire.  Normally the fruit just isn't ripe enough and should be left on the tree longer.

The best thing is to call your state's extension office and call or email a Master Gardener.  S/he will be able to help you the best, having the local knowledge for you that I don't have.

This year has been a bad year here in southeastern Arizona for both peaches and tomatoes.  We have tomatoes growinng everywhere but few are ripening!

  3. Go to a butanic garden a nd ask someone there

  4. maybe their not harvesting right. how long have you had them? maybe its the end to this peach tree.
