I've been an eBay user for really long time....I think around 6 years.

If buying:

I used to buy a lot of stuff on eBay  (around 5-6 yrs back) as deals were really good and there were genuine sellers. Now there is a lot of stuff on eBay compared to those days but i think good deals are hard to find. Primarily lot of people use eBay these days and they drive bid prices higher, usually to a point where you can find deals elsewhere.

Sometimes unique things (antiques etc) are no where to be found except on eBay

If you are a seller, eBay gives you a window of opportunity to sell to large number of prospective buyers.

If safety is your concern, eBay is absolutely fine. I have had my account hacked in twice (i had weak passwords) but both times eBay helped me out and canceled out fees.

I usually buy from reputed sellers (power sellers) when on eBay

Overall, I think eBay is good when you have to sell but look around when you are buying and come back if there is nothing competitive elsewhere.

1] Its okay but will soon die down.

2] Its okay if you have pennies to spend away on fees and creating shops, yes. NOT good when you dont make a sale - thats ebays way of money making I guess.

I believe there are loads MORE ways to buy and sell stuff online and many lose sales opps.-- by only sticking to eBay!

Theres Amazon, Sellit-right.com, Redbubble(for art) and loads more ways.

I hear more cases of people frauding on Ebay than ever before-whether thats of some suprise or not well thats another matter.
