Why aren't you composting? Vermicomposting takes next to no space and requires relatively little effort. In today's post "Live Earth" world, it seems like everyone should be composting their table scraps and garden cuttings.

  1. I hate filth!

  2. I don't compost.  Why?

First, I don't have table scraps.  Seems wasteful to cook food and then throw it away.

Second, the sheep and goats would be pretty unhappy if I start composting some of their food from the garden.  You want to deal with an angry goat?

  3. I have a tumbling compost maker that claims to turn out compost in a few weeks.  It is not-quite-full of leaves, mostly pin oak but also grass clippings and passionfruit leaves from a vine that went nuts, it has had a little garden soil and blood and bone fertiliser added and the contents are just slightly damp.  It has ventilation holes. I turn it over nearly every day and it gets sunshine for some hours every day.  Ideal conditions for aerobic breakdown, would you not imagine?  There is no sign of anything happening after nearly three months.  Last season it took nearly a year to produce anything resembling compost.

The soil here is hard clay.  The organic content down more than three inches is close to zilch, as far as I can see and the material might be good for making bricks or terracotta.  The topsoil layer is perhaps an inch thick.   Hit it with a pick and the pick bounces.  We are just coming out of five years of drought, well, maybe we are.  Worms?  What are they?

  4. There are ever so many excuses if you need to give one,but the committed person will find a way to compost  .come what may ,i always thought scrap & other compostable items were easy to come by,I stand corrected.I even though the compost heap / bin took things that  no longer had a useful purpose & then started life anew ,helping us out in the process. If you have pets, please attend to their needs first, any pets cats ,dogs, sheep or goats, their needs come first .

  5. To Answerer #1:  My backyard compost heap certainly is "non-compliant" with the restrictive covenant for my neighborhood...  but it's not a nuisance to any of my neighbors and they don't care.   So call me a violator!

  6. The home owners association in VA when I lived there would not allow it.

    I'm all for the idea.

  7. i don't need to......

  8. we compost!

the bad thing is that the winter months are too cold to compost, so we only do it for about half the year.

    but we do our best!
