I'm not getting one now, but i figure i'd get people's input and do some research in on it before i go out and buy one. I just bought 2 cockatiels and i love them. I just wanted to see what Macaw owners had to say (good or bad ) about getting a Macaw. Once again I'm not getting one any time soon so don't get all mad at me saying i need to do my research, I'm just interested. thanks

  1. macaws are very good birds.i have two severe macaws named romeo and juliet.i've had them 4 ten years now.they are a little work and you have to keep a balanced diet and clean accomidations and lots of love for them.but remember macaws live many a year so don't go into it lightly.

  2. Making the jump from cockatiels to macaws is HUGE.  The general rule of thumb is that all birds need attention but the bigger the bird, the more attention it needs.   I worked with macaws for years and they can be truly wonderful and I would like to own one some day but I won’t even consider it until I’m at a point where I don’t have to work full time and can be home with it a lot.  Also, they need a LOT of room.  Their cages are enormous and that’s not even including their play area outside the cage.  A bored or neglected bird becomes a mean and destructive bird in a rapidly short amount of time.  Also, look at the mess your two cockatiels currently make – then multiply that times 20 and you’ll have a rough idea of what a Macaw is capable of.  I’m am not bad mouthing macaws at all, just trying to give you a realistic picture of the care and commitment they need.  They are also very long-lived and it is not unusual for them to outlive their owners and you need to make sure there is someone willing to ‘inherit’ such a bird from you.  (Obviously this is a precaution you should take with just about any pet but with a large bird it gets more complicated.)

Meantime just concentrate on loving those little cockatiels of yours and working with them and have fun training them and playing with them.  You will find it VERY rewarding.  Ã¯ÂÂŠ
