What's your favourite quote or poem?

I am sorting through all my old college stuff and there was one English lesson where we all had to right our favourite quote on a piece of paper then put them in a pile and work out who wrote what. I have no idea who wrote the one I found in my folder, but it got me thinking about all those random quotes/poems that people know and I want to know more.

They can be from songs, films whatever I don't care. Plus gives me a reason to stop sorting stuff out, as I am so bored!

Oh here is the one that I found:

"I don't believe in an afterlife, so I don't have to spend my whole life fearing h**l, or fearing heaven even more. For whatever the tortures of h**l, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse."

  2. When love beckons to you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you yield to him, Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you believe in him, Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.

10 Things I Hate About You

I hate the way you talk to me,

And the way you cut your hair.

I hate the way you drive my car,

I hate it when you stare.

I hate your big dumb combat boots

And the way you read my mind.

I hate you so much it makes me sick,

    It even makes me rhyme.

I hate the way you’re always right,

I hate it when you lie.

I hate it when you make me laugh,

Even worse when you make me cry

I hate it when you’re not around,

And the fact that you didn’t call

But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you,

    Not even close…

    Not even a little bit…

    Not even at all.

  12. I think your quote is from the sci-fi author and scientist Issac Asimov.

    Here's my favourite quote:

"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.

So you mustn't be frightened if a sadness rises in front of you, larger than any you have ever seen; if an anxiety, like light and cloud-shadows, moves over your hands and over everything you do. You must realise that something is happening to you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand and will not let you fall."

Rainer Maria Rilke ("Letters to a Young Poet")

  13. Hmm... My quotes are all... Well, not from poetry or anything like that...

"Be yourself, don't take anyone else's **** and never let them take you alive"- Gerard Way

"It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but even more to stand up to your friends." -J.K. Rowling

"We have nothing to fear but fear itself"-Franklin Roosevelt

“You hate someone whom you really wish to love, but whom you cannot love. Perhaps he himself prevents you. That is a disguised form of love.”

but my most favourite of all is from the genius george carlin

“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating...

...and you finish off as an o****m.”  - George Carlin

edit: you've got me thinking about all the quotes i've collected over the years, heres a few i had hidden away in an old word document. i dont have a clue who said them though
