  1. I use a really good italian bread or sour dough, bought from a bakery. I fill my sandwich with a mixture of american cheese and cheddar. I usually add a couple slices of tomato as well. I butter both sides of the bread and toast in a pan until brown on both sides and the cheese is all gooey. Sometimes I also add some fresh basil and a slice of prosciutto if I am in the mood for a heavier, more filling sandwich.

  2. The Basic Sandwich?----Good solid bread, especially a pumpernickle or seeded rye.  I love a nice sharp Cheddar, although Swiss is good....especially if you put some Dijon mustard on the bread.

Horseradish sauce or pure grated HR will take a lot of the curse off plain old American cheese, or if you're stuck with horrible scary flabby bread.

Butter, not margarine (AAAAKKKKFFFPHLT) for frying....although if you want something **really** heavenly, grill the sandwiches in a mix of melted bacon dripping and butter.  (Just a bit---you're sauteing, not deep-frying.  Fry bacon, pour excess fat into a jar and cover; will stay good at least a year under refrigeration.  Use for baking cornbread, frying eggs, potatoes, onions, etc.

  3. Grey Poupon mustard, Gruyere cheese, sliced roma tomato, good quality brown bread, toasted first.  Then dipped in French toast mix (sometimes) or buttered on each side and fried.

That is if I feel up to doing it.

The easy way is ketchup, lettuce and cheese slices on brown bread, toasted and sauteed in Pam.

  4. i really like mine with muenster cheese, cooked with margarine on a hearty oat nut bread, with a little bit of bacon & some sliced tomato. yummm :-D

  5. i like whole wheat bread,2 slices, butter the outside, put cheese in-between, either cheddar, american or sometimes even swiss, fry in pan on medium temp. till brown, flip over and fry other side. remove from pan and eat!

  6. I cup of grated colby cheese on a slice of white bread, grilled until the cheese is molten and lightly golden brown.

  7. I like mine with tomatoes in the sandwich.

  8. I was told by many grilled cheese aficionados to use mayo instead of butter. So I squeeze/scoop a dab of mayo on slices of bread (usually some type of wheat), heat the grill to medium, put down the first slice of bread, mayo side down, lay my cheese (usually cheddar or munster), and top it with the last slice of bread.

I turn over the bread after 2 minutes and grill the rest of it for 2 minutes.

Then I wait for it to cool, slice it diagonally, and indulge..

tomato soup is a good side dish (with oregano!)

  9. The traditional Welsh Rarebit - the very first real "cooking" I was taught as a child in England.

Buttered bread, sprinkled with grated cheddar cheese, and a generous dash of Worcestershire sauce over the top, then grilled until the cheese starts to bubble.

It's great by itself, or in a bowl of french onion soup.

  10. My family's favourite is:

Butter 1 side of 2 pieces of bread. On the non buttered side of 1 piece spread vegemite, add some chopped onion, slices of cabana or ham and then some cheese. Top with other piece of bread buttered side up. Place in sandwich maker or under grill. Cook until golden.

  11. Hey!  :)  I just had me one of those!  I make it with mayonnaise instead of butter, and I sprinkle garlic powder & salt on before putting in the pan.  Oh, and smoked Gouda.  Best cheese EVER!  :D

Thhick bread (Texas toast or french loaf cut into slices)

    margarine

2 or 3 three slices of American cheese

Spread margarine on the bread. Put the bread on there butter side down. ..Lay the cheese on the non b uttered side. Place the other peice of buttered bread butter side down on top of the cheese. Let brown and flip let the other side brown.  Lovely with a bowl of tomato soup or cup of hot chocolate.
