Question:

What's your idea of excellent retail service?

I just got hired at Guess but I never worked at a clothing store before so I'm hoping for ideas on how to provide the best customer service possible.

Personality wise.. I'm kind of shy but I'm always friendly to customers (even the mean ones!) Customers have told me I'm very helpful and cheerful, but I heard some say I sound 'fake'.

Any tips??

  1. I like it when the sales associate says hello to me when i walk in, but doesnt ask if i need help (because im not stupid, i can find a pair of pants or whatever) but if im looking for a size, they come and say they could help me find a size. Just be realy nice, and not to overly helpful, then it's just anoying (: but yea just be cheerful and nice.

  2. As a customer I expect friendliness, attentiveness, and helpfulness. I think you are on the right track. If someone said you sound "fake" so what? Maybe they thought you sounded too sweet? That's a lot better than overhearing that you were rude or hateful. I am not naturally outgoing either and I felt overshadowed by co-workers when I was a waitress. As long as you are friendly, helpful and do your job without complaining, you are the cream of the crop. I've always liked salespeople that complimented me in some kind of way. If you aren't too shy tell them how great a color looks on them or how a certain style flatters them, but only if you mean it.

  3. Just smile and be attentive but not too attentive (you don't want to sound desperate) and just be friendly. Don't worry about people telling you that you sound fake. As long as you're being real that's the main thing.

  4. Suggest things and dont push things on them, If something looks bad suggest something else in the most nonchalant way. Be friendly and smile, be kind. I would rather have a shy girl serve me then a bubbly loudmouth that wont leave me alone. Be as useful when needed

  5. Being greeted when you walk into a store is essential!

but dont jump on them as soon as they come in, make it casual

Just a Hi how are you today.

The trick is to be relaxed.

It makes it sound forced when you're thinking of something to say to them.

That's where the "fakeness" could come from.

I used to work in retail and a key sign that people need help are their eyes.

If they're constantly looking around, not really looking at items, they might require assistance, either that or fidgeting with the clothes.

You need to know the key moments when to approach people otherwise you can come across as pushy.

So long as you are just friendly and yourself then people will consider you great at customer service!

And when the mean ones come in (shouldnt be too many at guess!)

    Just be understanding.......<--- key word!

    never be undermining or mean.

Customer service is a clothing store is probably the easiest out of all of them.

At least they come in to purchase and not to complain!

Just rememember that that is the reason and then everything will be great!

    congrats on the awesome job!

  6. Show 'em the goods...

No really, show them where the best pants are and stuff.

    Geez, you people are perverted.

  7. First of all, congrats on your new job! I can share you a few tips. Quite frankly, if you think of yourself as the customer, you'd know your expectations of what makes a great customer service/experience.

I'd suggest you go competitive shopping at different store in the mall preferably those competitors like Gap, Eddie Bauer, J. Crew, The Limited, etc to see how they treat their customers. Then think of what you can do differently if not better.

    G R E A T

G - Greet your customer with a smile (Sounds easy but I also need to greet even when I'm cleaning the fitting rooms, or doing projects/resets, or busy with another customer)

R - Resources--I am the expert of the brand that I'm selling, I must know the features and the benefits of the products. I can speak confidently about it.

E - Engage the customer-- I can find out easily what the customer needs and can provide a quick service for those that are on time constraint. For example, a customer needs a business outfit to wear for an interview appointment in one hour, or some one has a hot first date that night looking for something s**y but not too revealling.

A - Add-ons--I can sell more than three items to the same customer. I know my boss would be happy if I sell a lot and provide good customer service.

T - Thank the customer and invite them to come again. Are there gifts that need to be wrapped, or maybe help them carry stuff to the car?

These are just a few, as you work longer in retail you gain more experience.  The best part of the day for me is how I handle a difficult customer and turn him/her into a loyal customer.

  8. Personally I hate when sales ppl are too friendly or "in your face" but just be as helpful as you can but know when to leave well enough alone
