Question:

What's your opinion of babies in the workplace?

I keep reading and hearing about this new trend to have babies in the workplace. Some companies are allowing parents to have their babies in their office at work and work their job and parent the baby. This really seems strange to me, because it makes a baby sound like a plant to put on your desk at work. As if you can get plenty of your work done because a baby is easy breezy like a plant you put on your desk at work. I just have to water it once in a while.

What's your opinion about babies in the workplace? What's your opinion? Do you think it works and if so how does it work?

  1. Kids should not be in the workplace.  They are distracting to the parents and the other people trying to work.  As for the person saying we need universal childcare, give me a break.  That is just stupid.  I'm not paying for other people's daycare.

  2. The problem is..... at what age do you have to stop?? You certainly couldnt have a toddler or even one that is crawling around at 6months there at your desk getting into your trash, going thru the desk pulling out files and what not. ..... So what happens then...when the baby can move??

I think the better choice would be to have an onsite daycare system, so yes baby can come to work, but they go to the daycare room not your desk. and then the age issue is moot.

  3. Having babies in the workplace is a very bad development-in fact, it's unacceptable.  1)  babies will distract mom from her job duties, 2) babies will distract other employees from their duties, 3) employees will have to pick up the part of the mother's job that she can't cover working with baby, breeding resentment and overwork, 4) baby or children will be exposed to people, some of whom shouldn't be around children-I could go on and on, and I'm not being anti-family. Could you imagine a baby in a manufacturing office where there's machinery.

And now to earn my thumbs down: don't have children if you can't adequately take care of them.  Society has enough burdens that the workplace doesn't have to be compromised due to childcare issues.  Certainly don't have 6 babies when you can't provide for one.

The USA really needs to make universal childcare available, but that ain't gonna happen overnight.  Also, large employers would do well to make childcare available at the work site, but they often don't.  For a small business to do that would be the first step towards financial failure.

  4. It depends on how many words per minute they can type.

  5. Sometimes its out of necessity.  I have a friend who is a mother of 6 and sometimes she just cannot get a sitter to watch all six at once, so she takes her oldest (6) to work and he stays in the work room and watches t.v.  It's sad, but she has to keep working (all those mouths to feed)  She has 2 yrs old twins and she would never think to take them to work, nothing would get accomplished.

  6. I think if the mother has her own office and gets her work done it's fine, but how many out there do not have their own office and the wailing of a baby is disruptive to her co workers? How many mothers will be distracted by the baby and all the work does not get done and instead gets pushed onto her coworkers?

  7. Your interpretation is incorrect. It's not like a baby is put on display like a showpiece. It allows people to be able to make a living if they don't have/cannot afford childcare. I know this isn't something most companies will allow. It would have to be a very relaxed work environment.

How can you already have an opinion (a baby is like plant) then ask "how does it work"? You are way off base on this topic!
