What's your opinion of parents naming their kids after athletes?

I work with a woman who's a huge Red Sox fan and she named her new son Ted Williams.

I think if its something simple [[a name like that]] it's not too bad but if it's a crazy athlete name, then no.

What do u think, baby names section? =]

  1. If the parents like the name, and they have been inspired rather than directly influenced by the name, then this is fine.

But, I don't think its ideal naming the child after an athlete (especially someone participating in a league as part of a team) just because the parents like that team or athlete.

Whilst it is less likely for teachers to have a grudge against the child because they support at different team, it is almost certain that kids who support a different team will stay away from the child or tease it.

Plus, the child may grow to like a different team to the parents, and dislike the team with the player they were named after.

  2. Personally, I don't think that if the whole family that is raising the kid are like devoted fans to a specific athlete, the kid shouldn't be named after the athlete, lol.

You know how some kids are named after saints or something? I think that's way different from naming a kid after an athlete... lol.

And IMHO, it's just kind of a little weird.

.....then again, if you're thinking about Michael Phelps as a kid's name..... :)

    hehe

  3. I know what you mean.  I know a woman who named her daughter Jordan after Michael Jordan.  I don't think parents realize what they are doing to their children.
