What do you think this poem is about?

"Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen,

Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.

They do not fear the men beneath the tree;

They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.

Aunt Jennifer's finger fluttering through her wool

Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.

The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band

Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer's hand.

When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie

Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.

The tigers in the panel that she made

Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid"

  2. Seems to me that the tigers personalities and freedom (trees) is what she longs for (ordeals she was mastered by). The reference of difficulty pulling the needle and the heavy ring either signify a negative and abusive relationship or loneliness from the Uncle's untimely death. I'm prone to thinking the former from the 'terrified hands' portion but that could also be fear from being alone or fearing death as well. I'm not a huge fan of poetry but this one is kind of neat.

  3. I think it means that no matter how mundane and ordinary your life has been, if you create and leave behind something beautiful, it will live on long after you are gone. Lovely poem, by the way...

  4. Observe: The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band...

When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie

Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid"

Connect:The frist thing i noticed was that a ring represents union right so if that union is heavy on her it must be for a reason... maybe she doesnt love her husband... or it could be that shes tired... Or maybe her husband has passed and that union is hard for her to carry on herself

Then the thing is "terrified hands will lie"... Maybe when shes dies shes a peace and that union or wieght she has may go away

Its funny cause she creates something beautiful out of her hands that are in pain and after they speak that she dies the tigers keep on painting a picture were their happy.... from begging to end but that not the same for the aunt. Certain words describe she has a burden or something. Or that she surfer like the word terrified..

Infer: Maybe shes just tired and wants to rest and since she made happy tigers in others painted a pretty picture for herself she wants to be able to feel that. And she might not feel that till its her time to die.

Conclude: An old lady who simply wants to rest and not have to worry about being alone or maybe having to struggle with the life she has becuase no words are used to describe shes happy but ppaint a picture of a someone whos old and just waiting for time to pass by.
