  2. well even though i dont own any rats seem to be sweet clean intelligent liitle creatures they are also very cute :)

  3. Hey, I LOVE my rats!! I have three male rats.

Just to tell you don't use ceder as bedding and don't let the male rat have oranges( any thing that has aorange in it.  Peopel say it can kill them.  I would just never give it to them)!!!!!

GOOD LUCK with the new baby!!

  4. The only good rat is a dead one.

    Sorry.  They scare me.

  5. I totally agree!

They're the best pets i've ever had :)

  6. love 'em! i have had 11 total... over the past eight years. and i have two dumbos now named rita and lucy. they are cunning little creatures who are very sweet and i blast to watch.  i also have never had a male... because i hear that it is a little riskier to get multiple males because they may fight... and i like to have more than one together so they can play. but i do love all rats... even the one who bit me in the pet store. that is the only time i have ever been bitten by one and it was because it was old and never handled. :(  i think rats are great pets i just wish they could live longer.

  7. I like them. They make great pets, are very personable, and bite less then most other rodent pets.

  8. I do not have any significant opinion on rats. They are animals, similar in appearance and size to mice, and that about sums up my knowledge of rats.

  9. I do not think rats are cute. However, I've never had a rat for a pet, so I have no opinion on whether they make good pets or not. I hate wild rats though. They cause a lot of problems.

  10. I run a rescue that focuses on the pet rat. We rescue and rehome hundreds of rats every year.

I think that rats make amazing pets. They are smarter and more affectionate than all other rodent species. They are less likely to bite, more easily trained, and are incredibly entertaining. Because of the domestication of the pet rat, we have developed cures for hundreds of diseases, we have been able to help people with certain mental disabilities, and developed safer ways to process and preserve foods. We owe a lot to this one small creature.

Rats are one of the few animals who practically domesticated themselves. Wild rats almost always rely on humans and our waste for their food and habitat. It took thousands of years to get cats and dogs to the point where rats have gotten themselves. Our close relationship with the rat has made us wary of them. The old saying "familiarity breeds contempt" definitely applies here. I think that in a philosophical way, rats sometimes remind us of ourselves, and we don't like that. I believe that if we could take a person who hates rats and really examine their feelings, we'd dig up a lot of self-loathing.

You will likely get a lot of ignorant replies about how rats are vicious or disease-carrying vermin. No one who has spent time with rats, even wild ones, would say something so childish. Other animals like cats and dogs carry far more zoonotic diseases and parasites than rats. Lets not forget that animals like guinea pigs and hamsters are also huge vectors for disease in the areas where they are native. Heck, rabbits also cause significant damage to agriculture.

I have a question for you though. Are you only getting one rat at a time? Rats do much better in pairs or trios. Maybe you should consider getting your rat a friend. :)

  11. I've never had one but I've heard they're great pets! They dont gross me out or anything and wouldn't be against getting one. I also think rat traps are cruel.

  12. I can't think about rats without thinking about the time I held one of my feeder rats buy its tail and it twirled & whipped around making the skin on the tip of his tail rip off (a whole single piece) ech!

  13. I think it's funny when people say that they're unintelligent or disease carriers. It's obvious they have never spent a significant amount of time with domesticated rats and are simply stating whatever they think based on prejudices based on WILD rats, which are not the same (although I believe wild rats get much more flak than is deserved. They aren't such big disease carriers, certainly no more than humans are). And if they have had them, they likely have not had them in a good environment. Rats who are kept in cramped or dirty conditions are unlikely to show their real personalities.

They're extremely intelligent and friendly. The most affectionate small pets I have ever encountered, and I work in a pet store so I encounter them all. They will l**k, come when called, and learn tricks. I love them.

You're more likely to be attacked by a hamster than a rat.

  14. Not great pets. Their brains are too small, and they provide little to no entertainment.

  15. I love rats, a friend of mine had several they were super adorable. i watched the premire episode of verminators and it almost made me cry! i know wild ones are dirty but they still are as intelligent and cute as their domesticated couisons they were jabbing at them with sticks and crushing them behind a door. it was horrifying.

  16. I love rats and think they are one of the cutest animals.  I would love to get a couple rats, but my mom cries everytime you even talk about them because she is so terrifyed of them.  I was actually just looking at five giant rats today, four of which were brothers and I watched them play with each other.  It was really cute.

  17. Rats are the best pets!!!!

  18. I LOVE my rats that i got about a month ago,Their names are Peach and Daisy. They are so smart and love to play. They are the most amazing small pet you can have

  19. We had an albino that used to sit on our shoulders all the time.  I think they are adorable and great pets!

  20. I absolutely agree with the last person.  Your rat should have a rattie friend.  Would you want to be alone with only members of another species for company?

  21. rats brains are not small. they are very inteligent. my rat followed me up and down the stairs outside and even did tricks. they learn very fast and can be fun pets. i used to share my cereal and popsicles with my rat salem. and he surprisingly lived to be seven which is an amazing age for a rat cuz they usually live 3-4 years

  22. i love rats! albino one's are awesome with there white fur and pink eyes! wooohooo!!! rats are awesome, there small, and really fun to take care of!

  23. Never had any, but i want some! they look really really sweet and cute!

  24. A rat as a pet might be okay, but I don't like to see them in my yard. I once had a hamster, they are in the rat family, and loved it. I just don't want rats in my yard. They are not pets, and will eat anything they can. I don't want my things stored in the garage or attic eaten. They have to go!!

  25. Why would anyone want to make pets from disease carrying vermin?  Rats should be exterminated from all of North America.  If you knew how much damage was caused by rats you would feel the same.

  26. all wild animals carry diseases and should not be made into pets unless already domesticated  for a good long while (like dogs, cats, birds, etc.). rat are no exception. yes, wild rats carry diseases and do a lot of damage. BUT, pet rats do not. rat are smart, loving, friendly, and probably the nicest of the rodent family. much better pets than hamster make.

i love rats. i breed them and make nicer rats for pets. i had hamsters growing up as a kid but rats make much better pets!

  27. i like blue rats, not the white ones though (those red eyes freak me out!)

i tried to get one last summer but my dad wouldnt let me (little did i know when i asked, hes deathly afraid of them).
