The Pittsburgh Penguins want to put up two banners that are 7 feet long, (i'm pretty sure) one with Marc-Andre Fleury & the other with Sidney Crosby. Mayor Ravenstahl doesn't mind it, but it has to get passed by the Councilmen before anything is done because there's a limit on how big a banner can be.

I think it's ridiculous. I hate saying this but i'm sure if the steelers wanted to put up a huge banner, the city would let them just because Pittsburgh is... cough cough cough, a football city. =\

your views and opinions, please?

  1. That s too bad for Pittsburgh.  Your city should stand up and support/get behind your team in the finals, especially after alomost losing the team. Goes to show you how much more is needed to spark interest in certain markets.  Sorry you have to wait for some clowns to make a simple easy decision.  in Detroit, a local company sews a huge Jesrey and we put it on a statue downtown for people to see.  fans and others alike will be taking pictures of it with friends etc, It generates so much interest and you will probably see it and hear it mentioned on at least one of the telecasts!  Detroit is HOCKEYTOWN!!!

    LET'S GO RED WINGS!!!

  2. dont use so much glitter

  3. There's more to this issue. This goes back to that Lamar sign shenanigans and the whole thing with the mayor's secretary taking gifts from people. The council established a law or enforced a law after the mayor let somebody put a huge sign somewhere in Pittsburgh. The council WANTED to be able to put the banners up, but they could not find a way to bypass the law. They came up with several ideas, but I don't feel like listing them. Basically both the mayor and the council turned this into a mud-slinging affair, but stopped before it cast a "dark cloud" over the Penguins' Cup run.

The Pens pulled the plug on the banner idea themselves anyway. They decided, I think it was Sunday, that the idea was "impractical". I think they realized what a fuss this would be.

Oh, and I don't think the Steelers would be allowed to put up huge banners just because Pittsburgh is a football city. It has more to do with MONEY. Who would say no to the wealthy Rooneys? The Steelers = mad cash.

ADD: I definitely agree that the Steelers would get their banner up, possibly promptly. I didn't mean to make it sound like I don't think it's partially because Pittsburgh is a football city, that's part of the reason, just not all of the reason. :)

  4. I know what you're saying about the Steelers and all, but I think it's more to do with a "Goody Two Shoes" attitude in the City Council.

The Mayor should have the clout to tell them to worry about more important civic issues.

  5. i think people are making a bigger deal out of this then it actually is... alot of stuff must go through the city before it can be done

  6. That's really dumb. If anything the Coucilmen should allow the flags to be put up, no matter what size. Crosby and Fleury have brought a lot to Pittsburgh and this banner issue in my view is disrespectful to them.

  7. city rules

i wish they put huge banners up here even though the devils dont play where i like, lol

  8. that is true and the pens deserve to have posters up its not like they are asking to put the worst teams banners up

    Show some team spirit!!

  9. Well technically to make everyone in the city happy.... I am sure Pittsburgh (the city) requires approval to put signs and banners anywhere. They have that law in INDY. So the PENS still have to follow local laws. I dont see any reason why the town council or whoever wouldnt pass it for them to be able to do it. I am merely stating that Cities have laws on signs and banners, otherwise you would see so many littering everywhere you look, it would make a city look ugly. If you allow one entity to break or bend the rules, whats to stop everyone else from doing it? The Mayor is legally covering his .....!

  10. when is the council meeting... have they said no yet.... I wouldn't complain until they have said no.  Everyone has to follow the rules, just with the steelers there would have been special session called five minutes after they put the request in.

  11. Its stupid, the only reason it isn't happened is because the city council is too ****** up to function.
