    EDIT: Rayleigh scattering is the scattering of light with shorter wavelengths - meaning light on the blue end of the spectrum. It is reflected by gas molecules in the atmosphere. Light with longer wavelengths - red and orange - shines on through, and that's what we see as a rising or setting sun.
