  1. It seems that "travelling around Australia" equals "need 4wd" to most people.

It really does depend on whether you're adventurous enough to actually get off the beaten track. If you're sticking to roads marked as solid lines on the maps, you could probably look at an alternative to 4x4.

If you decide on a 'conventional' car/wagon/small bus, perhaps you could consider installing a winch for peace of mind. Learn about recovery methods, survival tips and basic mechanics. Get advice on what essential spares etc to take with you, coil, alternator etc (even if you can't install them yourself, at least you might not have to sit around in some small town for a week waiting for it to arrive from Sydney).

Most places are accessible to 'normal' vehicles these days. eg, on my first 'around Australia' trip I went to the Pinnacles Desert in WA in mid-70s & it was definitely a 4wd-only track. I went there again in the 90s and it was an all-access road traversed by Greyhounds. Of course if you're talking about travelling the Strezlecki track or dune-bashing over the Simpson or something then a 4x4 is for you.

Also: Whatever vehicle you decide on, I strongly suggest a 'common' vehicle with 'common' wheels, tyres etc, not a fancy one full of electronic wizardry that your ordinary outback mechanic cannot easily work on.

  2. tryrt

  3. Toyota Landcruiser , you might be able to find a good one in your budget but get an inspection done before you buy to make sure.

  4. You might find used ones for double the price or very old ones for around A$10,000

  5. Are you kidding you won't find anything GOOD for ten grand the Aussie outback is no place for pieces of c**p you must have a 4WD that is reliable and safe to fit 8 people and survive the kind of trip your talking about you would need a Toyota Landcruiser Troop Carrier and a decent one of them that will survive and more importantly get you all back alive is going to cost you at the very least twice that much. Every year people go bush and every year people don't come home all because they don't do their homework i would suggest what ever you buy go and do a 4WD driving course and explain to those guys what your planning and they'll soon tell you if your vehicle is up to scratch or not.

EDIT: I actually think you should just stay at home
