right now is an ideal time to buy him some new 20 and 30 round (green follower) magazines. As soon as the new president takes office, there are going to be some real changes in the laws made again, and there is every possibility that magazines that now cost around $12.00 each are going to skyrocket like they did under the last democratic president. Pick up a copy of shotgun news at barnes and noble or other books stores and go thru the ads for the best price. Try to get green followers, and look for mil spec as well. this will assure you of good megazines and not cheap junk. Another really good idea is to look for a good deal on some ammo for him as well, although ammo prices are really high, and are expected to stay that way for a long time yet.

Top of my list ACOG scope.  Like said above, they cost as much or more than the AR-15.  Magazines are also nice.  You can never have to many magazines.

I got one of these for my birthday and it is amazing to have fun with. It is a golf ball launcher that attaches to the barrel of the AR-15 and you have to make sure you have blanks so you dont destroy your golf balls/gun. It's 45 dollars and its very fun great buy =)

Spend some quality time shooting the AR-15 with your husband.  Ask questions.  Pay attention to the answers.  You may come up with some good ideas.

Perhaps simply enjoying the same activity together will become the best gift of all.

I think you should get him the magpul miad grip kit... its pretty awesome, alot of people find the stock grip a bit too small... what the miad is, is a modular grip with had insterchangable side and back panels to make the grip fit perfectly in your hand.  even cooler is there is storage in the grip for either cr123 batteries, AA or AAA, or an extra bolt and firing pin
