- Amu Hinamori

Amu Hinamori (日奈森 亜夢, Hinamori Amu?), the series' protagonist, is a student of Seiyo Elementary. Amu's classmates see her as "cool and spicy", but Amu is actually extremely shy and timid. Part of the reason for this misunderstanding is the trendy punk goth clothing her mother buys for her as well as the way in which she expresses her shyness and avoids doing new things which people interpret as 'cool'. However, when Amu wishes for the courage to be reborn as her would-be self, three colorful eggs appear the next morning, which hatch into Amu's three Guardian Characters: Ran, Miki, and Su. When one of her Guardian Characters Character Changes with her, she gets embarrassed because they make her speak in ways that she thinks are "totally out of character".

Because of her three Guardian Characters, Amu became a member of the Guardians, the school's student counsel, although she refused to join at first. Amu's position with the Guardians is the Joker. Her task, as the Joker, is to search for and purify X Eggs and X Characters, the corrupted forms of people's would-be selves. Ran, Miki, and Su help Amu with her task through a process called a Character Transformation, which is enabled by the Humpty Lock and grants Amu special abilities depending on the Character Guardian. Later on, Amu also creates a fourth egg, known as Diamond.

Amu's two main love interests are Tadase Hotori, the King's Chair of the Guardians, and Ikuto Tsukiyomi, a boy in the employment of Easter. However, she also has several minor crushes, such as Kairi Sanjo, Kukai Souma, and Nagihiko Fujisaki. Amu's primary rival is Utau Hoshina, an Idol singer for Easter who is jealous that Ikuto shows an interest in Amu instead of her. In the anime series, Amu is voiced by Kanae Itō.

- Ran (ラン, Ran?)

Ran is the first to hatch from Amu's eggs and represents Amu's desire to be more honest and athletic. Ran wears a pink visor and a cheerleader outfit and sport shoes. Ran is hardly seen without her pink pom-poms. She is frequently cheering Amu on. During Character Change, Amu gains increased athletic abilities. On Character Transformation, Amu becomes Amulet Heart. Amulet heart wears a pink visor with a heart-shaped clip on it, a pink themed cheerleader outfit and sport shoes. Her hair is tied up in a ponytail. Amulet Heart is capable of using the attacks 'Spiral Heart' and 'Spiral Heart Special' to trap the X-eggs, and 'Open Heart' to purify them. Ran's chant is 'Hop, Step, Jump'. Ran is voiced by Kana Asumi in the anime series.

- Miki (ミキ, Miki?)

The second Guardian Character to hatch is Miki. Miki represents Amu's desire to be more level headed and artistic, Miki is also the one to help Amu make fashion choices. Reflecting Amu's love interests, Miki has shown an interest in Tadase's Guardian Character, Kiseki and Ikuto's Guardian Character Yoru AND Kairi's Guardian Character Musashi. During Character Change, Amu gains increased artistic abilities. On Character Transformation, Amu becomes Amulet Spade. Amulet Spade wears a big light-blue button cap with a spade-shaped clip on it, a light-blue waistcoat and a pair of dark-blue shorts. She wears long gloves, white and blue stockings and a pair of brown woodcutter-styled boots. Some of her hair is loosely hung by the sides of her face, and the rest of her hair is hidden in her big button cap. Amulet Spade is capable using the attacks 'Colourful Canvas' and 'Colourful Canvas Special' to trap the X-eggs, and 'Open Heart' to purify them. Miki's chant is 'Drew, Draw, Drawn'. Miki is voiced by Nanae Katō in the anime series.

- Su (スゥ, Sū?)

The third Guardian Character, Su, represents Amu's desire to be more caring and improve her domestic skills. However, Su is prone to silly mistakes. She is very fond of Amu's teacher, Yuu Nikaidou, after helping Nikaidou realize that he was a good person and can still pursue his own dreams. Amu gains an improvement in cooking and sewing skills during Character Change, as well as becoming "Too Girly". During Character Transformation, Amu becomes Amulet Clover. Amulet Clover wears a maid hat with a clover-shaped clip on it, a frilly apron, and a balloon skirt. She also wears ballerina shoes and frilly gloves. She ueses big green ribbons to tie up her hair into two ponytails. Unusually,Amulet does not us 'Open Heart' to purify eggs. She uses the attacks 'Remake Honey' and 'Remake Honey Special' to fix broken things into their original state. Similarly, she uses 'Remake Honey' and 'Remake Honey Special' to purify the X-eggs. Su's chant is 'Chip, Syrup, Whipcream'. Su is voiced by Aki Toyosaki in the anime series.

- Diamond (ダイヤ, Daiya?)

Diamond is Amu's fourth Guardian Character. She becomes an X Egg when Amu dislikes all the changes that were happening in the spring, and changes into a X-egg. While collecting X-eggs with Yukari, she finds Diamond's egg inside the box. She soon hatches into a X-character. Unusual
