  1. They are tubes that s***w into the end of the barrel to change the shot pattern.

  2. First you have to have a shotgun that uses a choke tube, you have different sizes it depends on what you are hunting a Turkey tube has the tightest pattern, Modified or improved cylinder is for upland birds like Grouse, ring neck and woodcock!

  3. choke tubes are metal tubes(cylinders) that s***w into the end of a shotgun to change the bb pattern.  Some shotguns aren't threaded for them and may be full choke. In those that have threaded barrels accepting chokes the choke can to changed to mod, improved modified, full, extra full, xx full, etc.

The tubes change the size of the pattern to fit whatever game your hunting.  Beware though because certain tubes can't shoot certain ammo, depending on whether its steel shot or not.  Therefore always check the ammo and choke tube.

There are tons of factory and aftermarket tubes available.

  4. Shotguns work by sending a handful pf pellets out at high velocity.

The barrel of a shotgun is a straight tube, until you get to the last few inches.  Then, the inside of the barrel constricts (shrinks) a little.  This shrinkage is called "choke" just as if you were choking the barrel by squeezing it.

The purpose of choke is to make the pellets stay in a smaller group for longer.  A more pronounced choke means that the pellets will stay in a smaller or "tighter" group longer.

Choke tubes allow you to change the amount of choke.  If you were shooting at relatively close targets, such as in the game of skeet, you don't want very much choke.  On the other hand, if you're shooting at farther targets, such as in the game of trap, more choke is a good thing.

No constriction at all is called "Cylinder"

Just barely constricted is called "Improved Cylinder"

A moderate choke is called "Modified"

A fairly aggressive choke is "Improved modified"

A really tight choke is "Full"

There are other selections, but those are the most common.

  5. They control how tight the shot pattern is. By shot I am referring to all those "bb's" inside of the shell. They usually s***w in the end of the barrel, but some barrels come with fixed chokes.

  6. im so sorry but if you dont know what choke tubes are i would not be shooing shotguns

  7. First off, a shotgun works by sending hundreds of small pellets toward the target.  As soon as these pellets leave the barrel, they begin to spread apart into a pattern.  A choke tube works by controlling how quickly the pellets spread apart.  A full choke keeps the pellets together the longest, while an improved cylinder lets the pellets spread rather quickly.

The reason for choke tubes is to change the effective range of your shotgun.  A wide pattern such as provided by the improved cylinder is best for close range as it is easier to hit a target with a wide pattern versus a skinny one.  There is a distance however at which not enough pellets will strike the target for a reliable kill with an improved cylinder choke.  This is when a modified or full choke comes in handy.  A tight dense pattern obtained through a full choke is great for long ranges as it keeps the pellets close together for a longer time, ensuring enough pellets strike the target.  A full choke could be used for close ranges but it is difficult to hit your target because of the narrow pattern; and if you do manage to hit a close target with a full choke, well there usually isn't much left to field dress.

There are many choke tubes available; including cylinder, skeet, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified, full, extra full, and turkey.  The three choke tubes I use are improved cylinder, modified, and full.  Improved cylinder I will use when the shots are 30 yards or less ; Modified for 40 yards or less; and Full for 50 yards or less.
