What Are My Chances??!!?? {{PLZ Help}}?

Question

Ok, My dream since I can remember is to go to Yale University and become a med. doctor. I have been homschooled since pre-school (I'm in the 10th grade now) but I was wondering what my chances are to getting accepted to Yale...

- I've NEVER failed a year,

- I've done 2 years in one 2 times!,

- I love to read,

- I'm a very good writer,

- umm, I always get A's and B's,

-I'm very good a math, science and history....

That's all I can think of off the top of my head lol=]

Well, your chances are pretty good. My older siblings are both at top class Uni's and they were always home-educated.

The only bit of advice I could give you is that, in my country at least, medical schools want to see heaps more than just excellent educational achievements on your resume.

Things such as never failing school and always getting great grades etc are all well and good but, here, the medical schools just take it for granted that all applicants are as good (or better) as that academically anyway.  They want to see something else that makes you stand out from the crowd: a history of voluntary work; community service; apprenticing yourself to a doctor; spending your holidays working as a PSA; sporting achievements; taking part in CCF activities, Venturers etc etc.

(They also look for people with achievements away from studying and medicine because they understand how tough and how stressful the course and the life is; they're looking for people who can 'switch off' and live a life away from the books, the job etc).

I can't tell you whether the admissions staff at Yale are going to be looking for something similar, ie something more from you than sheer academic achievement...but it might be worth your while finding out sooner rather than later.

It sounds like you have a great chance of getting into Yale. But you may want to take a lot of AP's and SAT's to prove to yale how good you really are.

You may want to look into to see if you can volunteer at a hospital near you. It would be a good chance to explore the medical career, and you may be able to show this experience to Yale on your application.

I think you are on the right track and stand a very good chance of getting in.  I think you ought to write the Admissions office of Yale, asking them for advice about fast track advanced studies and extra curricular activities.

You should get at least a 2200 on your SATs to be considered for Yale. You should really be getting all A's, though; you're homeschooled and have a lot of time, first of all, and you didn't list any extracurriculars, which I assume you don't do. I think your SAT scores are going to be critical since colleges can't say how well you've actually done. Also, take at least 2 SAT II's.

I think you would have a very good chance. If you went to a school for at least a year it would probably help.

And for SATs you could get one of the study books (easy to find like on ebay).

You'll need two letters of recommendation from people apart from your parents who have taught you. The application for Yale is online, download it now and start working on it.

I think your chances are very good.

Here is a quote from an HSLDA article:

"In addition to Harvard, prominent schools like **** Yale (CT), Princeton (NJ), Texas A&M, Brown University (RI), the Carnegie Mellon Institute (PA), the Universities of Arizona, Maryland, Virginia, Hawaii and many others all have flexible transcript criteria, accept parental evaluations, and do not require any accreditation or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Plus, from the Yale site an article entitled "What Does Yale Look For [in and applicant]:"

I was homeschooled up until this year (I'm in college!). Try contacting NARHS (North Atlantic Regional High Schools). They give home schooled students credit for a real diploma, and send you your diploma when you finish high school.From what I heard, you sound a lot like me, and you have very good chances of being allowed at this school.

You need at least a 19 on your ACT to be accepted (It's nothing, for you, you sound like you'll be like a 25. The most you can get is 35).
