Colt and FN are the only official suppliers to the US military.   That is why many people recommend the Colt.  They get hung up on exact "mil spec".  Colt is often the most expensive choice.  You should be able to find a nice M4 style rifle for less than or near $900.  

I can personally attest for the reliability of Armalite, Bushmaster and Rock River Arms.    I would not be afraid of a DPMS or an Olympic Arms rifle either.  These 5 are all commonly available for a reasonable price.

What your probably after is an M4 type civilian rifle.... You can get an M4 in some areas but its impossible in most states and a paperwork hassle in others because the M4 is full auto......  

Consider the AR15.... Bushmaster, DPMS and Rock River Arms make an excellent rifle.... If you want to build your own then consider Model 1 Sales....

You know a lot of people talk about Colt being so great , blah blah blah, but we were shooting a Rock River and a Colt side by side and the Rock River shot just as well as the Colt and was about $600 cheaper.
