Question:

What Are Some Good Seeds For Young Children To Grow??

I bought a heap of pots for the kids in my Mothers Group to decorate, and was thinking about getting some seeds to put in them, so we could watch them grow.

We have done the Grass Heads, with stockings & Grass seeds, and they all enjoyed them. So I think they'd enjoy this.

Can you recommend any seeds that would be *child-proof* to grow?

Or would it be better to buy some seedlings??

If it makes a difference, I live in Tasmania, Australia.

  1. Well I'm in Western Australia, and my 5yr old daughter loooves to grow things and has been like that for a few years now, when she was 3 we bought some Strawberry seeds and amazingly enough the plants were still alive just the other week, unfortunately they aren't now as our dog decided to dig them all up and trash them, so I went to Bunnings (do you have that there) and saw this pot especially for children that came with soil and seeds for young children to grow, and they are petunias and Blue Lobelia's, we're going to plant them this afternoon in the pot (she is) and she also chose some more strawberry seeds and some flowers too to put in our new garden bed - they are called - Dahlia - Cinderella.

Regular watering is all most types will need, don't think there are any real "child proof" ones. If you find any let me know please lol, I think I need them lol, my 5yr old is better at keeping plants alive then I am lol.

  2. A few seeds that will sprout quickly and the children will be able to watch progress are:

    Watermelon

    Corn

    Sunflowers

    Any beans

    Marigolds

    Citrus seeds

    Radish

    Pumpkin

    Sesame

    Flax

    Millet

    Buckwheat

  3. I prefer beans and corn. Squash and Gourds are nice if you have the room to grow them.

  4. I enjoyed growing Watermelons with a friend's kid.  I am not sure if Watermelons are popular with you guys there but they are lots of fun to grow.  Since it is winter there, you could start sprouting the seeds in peat.  As the seasons transition to Spring, you could plant them in the ground.   Through Spring and Summer, the kids could keep the plant watered.  In the middle of Summer, you have cool sweet treat.  Good luck

  5. I have planted wild flowers in pots and marigolds they grew wonderful even when the kids forgot to water them everyday

  6. Green beans are a good choice. Plant about three or four per pot and keep the best one.

  7. Plant Squash in the pots and when they mature and produce the kids can enjoy them at the dinner table as well as having the thrill of watching them grow.
