I'm not sure what exactly the manufacturing process is for the photovoltaic cells, but that could be one.

I think the only other things would be the amount of open space that has to be used for the solar array fields and the fact that you're creating the equivalent of an urban heat island with the array field.

I can live with that.

First of all, Solar Energy is what solar powerplants used and actually one of the safest type of powerplant... and so the Big Environmental impact is, it is safe! Like Solar powered batteries... Thank goodness this is invented or a lot of WASTED batteries roll over our yard... that's a bad thing.

I say the space the panels take up. Solar energy is quite weak. For example, even if we could convert 100% of the sunlight hitting a car on a sunny summer day into electricity, it would only be about 5 horse power. To run a 100 horse power car would take solar panels 20 times bigger than the car. And since real solar panels can only convert about 1/5 of the light to electricity, it would take solar panels 100 times as large as the car to collect enough light.
