  1. The boat moves.

  2. Your questions are vague.  This has not been studied much, if at all.

Long term effects ? None, really if you stop. Over a few  years, if not a lifetime,

       Incredible grip.

       Super lats.

       Tremendous leg strength.

Best cardiovascular exercise in the world.  The 1921 Harvard 8 crew who won the Olympics had a reunion 50 years later.  They were all in incredible health, all still very fit and strong.  Reported in a 1971 article in Sports Illustrated, which I subscribed to at the time.

BUT, as with any sport, improper technique can bring on injuries. In rowing, low back can happen, but is rare.  Wrist tendonitis occasionally happens, but again is faulty technique.

Calluses on the hands are common.  Bruised knuckles in a really bad boat if your hands hit the side of the boat as they pass over it.

There is no professional rowing.  Top rowers are among the most fit athletes in the entire world.  I don't think anyone is capable of more energy output in 6 minutes, anywhere, in any sport.

Heart rate recovery will be excellent. If not, it would indicate heart problems and from the tremendous strain they put on their hearts, it could kill them.  Anyone in really bad shape needs to get in shape first before wasting someone else's time in a boat.

A rowing race at the World Class level would be similar to doing 200 of : a deep jump squat to a bar, swing up to horizontal, and do a pullup.  Now try to picture doing 200 of those in 7 minutes.

  3. I row and the effects on me have been quite positive! I have become very muscular and it also helps me in other sports with endurance. You should row because you meet a lot of new people at regattas, you become fitter, and it is the best sport ever!!!
