  1. While the pay is usually better, you usually get better benefits in a government position. More holidays, health insurance, etc. Of course this varies greatly from region to region, and the specific type of job. I think job security may be better with a public sector job as well, but this might only make a real difference if you were a mediocre worker. You may get promoted quicker in private industry if you are the cream of the crop, but you might also be more vulnerable to layoffs if the economy goes sour.

  2. I assume you mean private industry as opposed to working for the government.  Generally, the main "perk" is higher pay.  Lots of government jobs pay well, but private sector generally pays more.  Government jobs usually have a lot better job security though and often some form of pension.

  3. Besides better pay, another perk is better office conditions (bigger cubicle, better carpeting, etc.) for each equivalent pay grade.  Meaning, that if you share an office with 4 other workers in a government job, you'll likely share it with 2 or even have your own little cube if you do the same work in the private sector.

You can also get more responsibility faster in the private sector (the military is an exception).

The downside, as has been mentioned, is that you have less job security.
