  1. You get limstone out of it,You end up with a big hole that you can charge people to dump rubbish in.To fill it up again.


  2. The advantages to have a limestone quarry is you get to make concrete. The Romans had easy access to a limestone quarry and as a result they were able to create a concrete that would dry and then hold while under water. This is how they were able to build their aquaducts to bring water into the city of Rome. They had the highest standard of cleanliness in the Western World. This is a record that was not broken until present day. They used their water for both regular bathing and to wash clothes/dishes and also for toilets.

  4. Advantages: You get limestone, which you can use for

    (1) Making concrete when burnt and mixed with appropriate amounts of clay

    (2) Limestone of suitable quality is a good dimension stone which can be used for  building

    (3) Limestone can be used as an aggregate ( crushed rock)

    (4) Limestone can be used as a feedstock in some industrial processes, for example desulphurisation of coal-fired power station flue gasses, in iron and steel production or in fertilizer production.

    All the above provide jobs and economic stimulus.

    Disused quarrys, if there is no risk of contamination of the water table (uncommon in limestone areas) can then be used for landfill, currently a very lucrative business.

    Very old limestone quarries, once disused can become quite picturesque, become used as nature reserves, be used for recreation such as rock-climbing

    Ababdoned or active quarries are usefull resources for geologists if access is safe.

    Disadvantages:

    Noisy, unsightly and often located in sites of outstanding natural beaty such as the peak district or dales national parks in  the UK - need large volumes of heavy lorries

    Destruction of existing habitat and destruction of rare karst and cave systems

    The disadvantage is a dusty car when you drive by.
