I think telling your children about the mistakes you have made makes them look at you in a different light.  Instead of thinking that their parents don't understand what they're going through, they start to look at them as fellow human beings.  It is appropriate, however, to wait to tell them things until they are at the proper age to digest the information.  It may not be appropriate to tell your 10 year old that you did drugs but once they're 15, it may be a good time to let them know.  Don't lie to your kids, when they find out they'll resent you for it.
