I just finished reading the wikipedia articles as well as the census statistics for 2006 and noticed a major difference in the way that "Greater Toronto" was defined. The CMA had only 5.1 million but the agglomeration of York, Halton, Peel and Durham had 5.5 million. The estimate for 2006 from the province of Ontario was 5.8 million. The Wikipedia article also established that Hamilton, Guelph and Niagara Region could be added soon. New Tecumseth and Bradford West Gwillimbury also in the CMA but not the region agglomeration. My question is, what Municipalites should be part of the GTA?

*Found this somewhere. So this begs the question, where does Toronto's influence stop?*

  1. The whole province is going to be Toronto soon! Lol! Before you know it, it'll take 8-9 hours just to get across the city! :) :)

I thought Hamilton was already a part of the GTA. Well maybe not now that I think about it. But really I don't think the Niagara region should be included in the GTA. Way too far.

To be honest I hate the whole surrounding area thing. It confuses the heck outta me. Ottawa is getting bad for that. They're saying soon Carleton Place will be considered Greater Ottawa Area.

  2. Toronto's influence doesn't really stop for a long time. You can't just add places to the GTA because they are influenced by the city. I think there are legal requirements too, once you add another municipality to the GTA the city has to pay for some of its roads and stuff.

  3. it is not terribly relevant

the only significance this designation would have

would be into relationship to Provincial gov't regional planning
