Question:

What Army Regulation (AR) Covers Smoke Breaks?

I'm pretty sure there isn't anything specific about 'smoke breaks', and have looked in the "5 Series" (Management) of AR's, but can't find anything.

I'm pretty sure the only thing thing close to breaks is dependent on A: Heat Category and B: A 'guideline' for X many hours of a block of instruction.

But nowhere do I believe a 'smoke break' is specifically mentioned, if I'm correct... I believe it is a courtesy that is earned.

If you know the AR, hook me up please.

  1. For many years ciggarettes were in the C-ration meals. I entered the Army in 1969 and during that time your platoon sargeant may have you in a formation , command At-ease or Rest and then he would say "Smoke-um if you've got them".  During the 80's and 90's smoking was getting where it was not allowed inside military buildings and smokers had to smoke outside. I have been retired for 15 years and do no know if there is a regulation on smoking. I am sure that there are rules that are set at unit levels.

  2. Can't speak for the Army, but in the Air Force there is no such regulation.  Breaks of any kind (instructional, bathroom, smoking, meals, etc.) are all at the discretion of the commander for military personnel.  Civilian personnel have breaks as specified in their contract, and it's usually two 15-minute breaks and at least 30 minutes for lunch for every 8-hour work day.

  3. The Military is trying to make everyone QUIT smoking for their health.

  4. Under TRADOC (Training and Doctrine Command) regulations within a classroom training environment such as you might encounter in Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, Non-Commissioned Officers Educational System, Officers Candidate School, Officers Basic Course, Officers Advance Course and in any and all training programs all personnel are entitled to one ten minute break for every fifty minutes of classroom instruction for the purposes of combating fatigue and to use the latrine facilities.  There is no Army Regulation that states you have to be permitted to smoke.

  5. Since smoking is being banned on most military bases, I doubt there is any listed.
