Athena, the goddess of wisdom,military strategy, and crafts, was the ruler of Athens when she won it in the contest against Poseidon, the god of the sea. She won this contest by presenting a good gift to the previous ruler of Athens, Cecrops. Athena presented an olive tree while Poseidon presented a stream as salty as the sea he rules over. Athena won of course.
