Back in the day for example, if you lokked at Metallica's lyrics (primarily from Ride through Justice, but a few like the God That Failed on the Black Album too) it was really well written, expressive commentary.

Songs like Master of Puppets (Drugs), One (Horrors of War) Blackened (Environment) God That Failed (Blind Faith/Religious Fanaticism) Sanatarium (Mental Health ) were simply amazing, and far deeper than most of what their contemporaries were writing about.

Can you think of any bands TODAY that write similarly deep lyrics?

  1. I THINK IF YOU LOOK AT WHAT SERJ TAKANIAN IS MAKING HE GETS VERY POLITICAL AND WHAT NOT WHEN COMING UP WITH SONGS

  2. I think Throwdown has some of the best metal lyrics.....they have realistic, relatable and overall deep subjects....

Like from the song "False Idols".......This quote is very real...

"Please don't idolize, cause these people are trained to ******* hypnotize,

please don't idolize, cause these people are trained to **** with your mind"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7gGhn1GI...

    Or the song "Burn"

    "You're living for one thing

Did you come this far to let life live you and betray your heart?

Disconnected, by the doubt in your head

You've been scarred by failure but never again

In this life you only get one chance at one thing

Trust in who you are and who you're becoming

Cus when you thought life had come undone

You crush all those who spit in your face

    ‘Cause your time has come..."

    Or the song "S.C.U.M."

    "We need a ******* plague

A flood, a war to kill it all to cure it all

Cause every corner turned the scum of the earth

**** the gangs of middleclass suburbia

    The gutter punks

Their prozac medicated parents too strung out to give a ****

    Where did we go wrong?

How in the h**l did it come to this?

You're pissin in the wind if you think it can be fixed because I'll tell you what we really need…

    Deliverance

Go to your gods, beg for

Deliverance from the scum of the earth

Let the locust swarm, allow the jaws of earth to swallow us alive

Baptize me in the blood of scum for rebirth

If I see another pedophile priest released

A hipster glam rock wannabe, a cop shooting an unarmed teen

I'll carve my eyes out with a stick"

    (can't find link)

    Or the song "Holy Roller"

    "Crucify me for a lie

While You cut another line to breathe

Holy roller, poster child for fear and insecurity

Well, nothing is holy and nothing is sacred

They'll cut to the bone to get under your skin

I've stolen, I've lied, I've done my time,

But I won't pay for your sin

You don't have to bow your head in shame

Cause I can see right through you and I know that you have felt that way

Never will I bow my head in shame

I live this life with no regret, a lesson for you in respect"

My vote is definitely for Throwdown

    :)

  3. I would say Lamb of god has some pretty good, intelligent lyrics for their later albums.

  4. dave grohles project....."probot" had some nice messages in the songs.

  5. i agree with TOOL as long as we consider them metal.....literally, there is no metal band anymore with smart, expressive commentary

  6. BFMV bullet for my Valentine

  7. The only band with a message worth listening to these days is Tool. They are the Pink Floyd of our generation. Most other bands just talk about their personal issues...boo friggin hoo. Metal died when Metallica came out with the Black Album. Metal was bought out that day.

  8. try killswitch engage

  9. Sculptured comes to mind.

    Her Silence:

Eyes of sienna muse and dance

To our tune of subtle romance

    Exchanging of conversing stares

Casts a tune so potent, so rich, so rare

Eyes that speak whispering words and more

    Gentle images opens dream's door

So graphically elicit so delicately explicit

Is your beauty and every gaze

Trapped in this routine so shapeless

But I can't let myself speak nonsense

Such a trivial thing those first words

And who am I but a songless bird

    Forever in need of substance

But won't find it in that empty dance

    You deserve so much more

I want to give what I adore

My heart bleeds it's bloodied tune

    A silent serenade for you

Can't find the words to articulate

    A fantastic text to saturate

With these words I shall release myself

From your eyes to be never confined

    I can't speak empty words

    So is silence the option?

The comforting warmth of absent phrase

Trust in the quite dignity of sight

    Where are the impeccable lines?

    Where are golden stanzas, surreal?

    The couplets of rich poetry?

Dancing words of passion and romance?

  10. Nelsdev totally agree that Tool lyrically is one of the very few band besides Pearl Jam that are worth their weight in gold
