What Bedding should I use for my guinea pigs cage??

My cage is outside but on a table undercover, and the cage has two sections; an open wire living area and a bed box on the end. So what bedding should I put on the living area and what in the bed box??

The base of the whole cage is covered with lino, and I know to put newspaper on the bottom, but then what bedding on top of that??

Apparently carefresh is good, but I live in australia and dont know if they sell it here. And where would I put it, in the living area or both??

Do guinea pigs burrow in a bed box, like mice?? So do I need to fill the bed box with hay or something?? If so what sort of hay..

When I had mice, I used to put wood shavings on the bottom(but pine and cedar wood shavings are bad for gps) and flilled the little bed box thing with shredded paper. Is it the same sort of thing for cavies??

I know they need to eat hay, what sort??

Another thing..Where can I buy a animal safe wood protector in Brisbane Australia?? Thanks getting 2 gps soon

  1. Use wood shavings, but wood shavings that a suitable for guinea-pigs...i used with all of my guinea-pigs and it soaks up the urine...or like you did with your mice, you could give the guinea-pigs some shredded paper, that will soak up the urine. Also if you put enough in, they can hide them selves like burrow...its fun for them.

Im not sure what kind of hay, i just go to the shop and buy the hay that has a guinea-pig on it. But you have to make sure that the hay is dust extracted because the guinea-pigs lungs are only small and the dust isent good for them, also it can go into their eyes. But even though it says dust exstracted look at the actually bag the hay is in because sometimes you have bags with lots of dust in at the bottem or throughout the bag, dont believe sometimes what it says.

Well hope i helped  =]...have fun with your new guinea-pigs when they come.

  2. i trust carefresh bedding, or kaytee aspen shavings. also, shred up some colour- free paper towels for the bed box. they like to eat timothy and alfalfa hay. i dont know where to buy that. i live on the other side of the world from you.......................

  3. I live in NZ and I just use the hay that you can buy out of petstores and the ones that come in bails and stuff.

The only problem with that is, that after a coulple of days I have to replace it again because theyve eaten it.

I prefer to use fleece because its relitivley cheap, its reuseable unlike hay and it absorbs the urine and drys really quickly.

Perhaps it would be too hot for the summer time, but in the winter its good.

    hope this helps

  4. I live on the sunshine coast. I buy my sawdust from PETSTOCK there is one in brissy somewhere. Also you can use shredded newspaper..they love to hide in it or straw hay from the stockfeeds. Ask at petstock about the wood protector I have not heard of any safe ones for piggies but they might help

    Good luck with your piggies!!!

  5. i personally use the dried corn cob.  cause all the pigs ive had always forage and i've heard that the shavings had chemicals and stuff in them.  ever since i switched from shavings to corn cob, she seems more happy to dig and chew around.

  6. I would use Carefresh, but if you can't find it, use Aspen shavings or some sort or other paper product bedding. DO NOT use pine, as it can cause respiratory problems with cavies. You should probably put the bedding in both areas, just because some pigs have no regard as to where they relieve themselves. ;) Also guinea pigs need access to plenty of timothy hay, (not alfalfa, unless they are really young or pregnant--too much calcium) and, although the most my pigs will do is eat and sleep on it, I've heard of other guinea pigs burrowing through it, too.

Good luck with your cavies, I hope I helped!

  7. The hay your thinking of is timothy hay and they like to eat that. I use anykind of bedding as long as it's made for guinea pigs i think you should be ok. And i don't think guinea's like to borrow.
