  1. It looks like a swift.  And really it's not a good idea to keep a wild bird.  First of all, it's illegal to keep a wild animal unless you have a license.  Secondly, a Swift lives most of it's life in flight, and so just giving it a tray of bugs doesn't guarantee it's going to eat.  They need to catch their food in mid-flight - and the best way to simulate that is to hand feed it.

The best thing you can do is find your local wildlife rehabilitation center.  Call the SPCA, go to your local shelter, anything to find the local rehab center.  They will do what's best for the bird, and know how to properly take care of it.

I know it's tempting to keep it, but as I said, you would basically need to do round the clock feeding for it to survive in your care.  That's not good for either of you.  Good luck, and I hope this helps!

Edit - Oh, and now that I know where you're located, I looked it up.  It's a common Swift, which is in your range.  I'm not sure what you're version of the SPCA is, but any animal welfare organization should know where to take the bird for rehab.  Oh, and just for the record, I'm not encouraging you to feed this bird (because if you buy the wrong size or overfeed the bird, you could kill him), but mealworms are probably the closest thing you could buy him to simulate what he eats in the wild - which is small insects. (or flies, as someone mentioned, which I forgot are available at most pet stores! Silly me.)  But as I said, it's just so you know, it's not so you can actually buy it for him.

  2. I implore you to trust me on this one.  It is certainly not any species of falcon, crow, or swift.  It looks to me like it may be some kind of Nightjar or Nighthawk.  Nighthawks are *not* related to true hawks.

As for what others said about it being a sead-eater--certainly not!  This bird is found all over the world, and they feed on insects such as moths, mosquitos, flies, Mayflies, etc.  One bird can eat up to 200 mosquitos each night!  They are nocturnal.

The cage you have supplied right now is not enough space.  They rarely use their feet for walking, and prefer to fly to get to other places.  Get a cage that is around 3ft by 3ft by 4ft if you want to properly house it.

My guess is that the reason it cannot fly is because it has been stunned.  Maybe it flew into a window and is just stunned from the impact (birds are known to do this).  Just leave it outside in a brown paper bag with the top open.  This will hide it from predators but when it is ready, it can fly out.

    Best of luck,

    Phoenix

  3. Looks like some falcon type. You could also go to the petstore and show this picture and ask what you could feed him. They might know a little more :)

  4. Crow

  5. Mirtle

  6. thats obviously a Articuno

  7. I have no idea what type of bird this is.

But I know for a fact it is none of the above!!!!!!!

    Trust me!

  8. looks like a cockalottatitt, from tazmania

  9. my guess is a crow.

    maybe a swift.

    i dunno...

  10. i think its a nighthawk

  11. If he is a wild bird chances are he will need worms and perhaps some fruit, but you could try buying some wild bird food from the pet shop.......... You should take him to the vet to find out though and get him checked over to make sure he is healthy and see what happens from there.......

  12. it looks like some kind of small bird of prey....

  13. seeing how the beck is small and curved it is most likely a tree finch-  which will eat any plant material

but most finches are on islands and most habitats in the Galapagos Islands

    hope this helps

  14. He is adorable but I do not know what kind of bird he is, I will try to find out.  But please do not feed him worms, they carry a parasite that can cause gapeworm which can be fatal.  At this time I would recommend a dog food based diet which should be  quite healthy for your little one. Soak the dog food in water and blend until the texture of oatmeal.  Does it eat on its own or do you have to hand feed? If you hand feed then use the end of a stir stick or a straw cut to a spoon shape.  Do not place liquids in a birds mouth, do not use a syringe.  You can try www.starlingtalk.net and see if the members there can be of more help to you, they may recognize the type of bird.  There is also a recipe on the site on what to feed baby birds.

Also I think you should try and find a wildlife rehabber in your area who would be willing to take the bird, and they would know the type of bird it is....

birds do not need round the clock feeding, the parents do not feed them at night, they are fed for approx 12 hours, then 12 hours of sleep....

i wonder if he may be a type of falcon? It is definitely not a crow and I do not think it is a swift but maybe, here's a site to check and compare... http://www.londons-swifts.org.uk/PhotoGa...

  15. The short beak tends to indicate a seed eater. Try offering a small amount of canary-type bird seed. If it doesn't eat it, you may try some insects such as flies or moths. Really, I think a vet would be the most reliable person to tell you, though.
