  1. Nothing from animals.  I'm afraid you will find as did I that many many things that appear vegetarian are not.  Some soups use meat broth instead of vegetable broth.  Jello has some dirty secrets, yougurt using gelatin, and if you can't identify something in the ingredients, chances are they don't want you to.

  2. eat what u wanna eat, you might wanna be a person who eats meat rarely, or include fish in ur diet, some vegetarians do.. i call them vegequarians

  3. Vegetarians don't eat fish, meat, poultry or by proucts of slaughter. Watch out for gelatine- its not vegetarian

  4. Beware of the following ingredients:

    * Rennet - derived from calves' stomachs and used to harden some cheeses

    * Gelatine - made from boiled-up animal bones and skin, and found in some ice creams and yoghurts.

    * Suet, dripping and lard - solid fat from kidneys of cattle or sheep. Buy vegetable suet instead.

Worcestershire sauce also contains anchovies (small fish). Life and Health/Biona Worcestershire sauces are fish-free though.

  5. You should avoid gelatin (mainly found in sweets and jelly), animal rennet (in cheese), fish, cochineal (a pink-red food-colouring made from crushed beatles) which is E120.

Some whey power (found in chocolate) is not veggie, some beer and wine and fizzy drinks. For a detailed list of stuff to avoid have a look at the Vegetarian Society website:-)

Of course, if you're a veggie because you don't like animals to suffer then there are things other than food to consider. For example, do you want to replace shoes made from leather? Do you want to buy cosmetics and toiletries from companies who don't test on animals for example Avon or Lush? Those things are up to you and your concience.

All the things to avoid may seem like to much to take in all at once but after a little while you remember all the stuff you can and can't eat/wear/do as a veggie.

Good luck with your new vegetarianism:-)

  6. Also rennet - an animal by-product - which is used in cheese making. You can get cheese made without it, though.

PS. Those who don't eat any animal product, even if it doesn't involve killing it to get it  - milk, cheese, eggs - are vegans.

  7. nefink 2 do wid animals -x

  8. You cannot eat anything that tastes good.

  9. anything to do with animals i geuss. x

  10. I know gelatin has been mentioned, but also be on the look out for cochineal extract a.k.a ground up beetles, shows up in a lot of veggie foods. It' can be found in Trader Joe's veggie corn dogs, certain brands of yogurt and juice, etc.

  11. Vegetarians don't eat any kind of thing that was once living, and then skinned  (mostly alive) and chopped up for food.

  12. Looks like that most animal ingredients like rennet have already been mentioned.

Many wines are 'clarified' using blood, bone marrow, egg albumen, fish oil, gelatine or fish swimbladders (using isinglass).

There are vegetarian brands available. Look on the label or check with the supermarket or off-licence.

  13. look out for the suitable for vegetarians sign - all major supermarkets now use these. it will not be there on the pack if the procuct uses any meat or derivatives

also if you have decided not to eat eggs, then beware as 'suitable for veg' symbol considers eggs as vegetarian.

as the others said look out of rennet, gelatine and ask if cheeses are vegetarian - a lot of them have rennet which is made from calves intestines

  14. There have already been quite a few good answers, but as a veggie of 25 years I would advise the following as pitfalls to avoid - apart from the obvious dead flesh items! Non veggie cheese with rennet - check for a V symbol. Red foods like confectionery/yoghurts - check for carmine - it's made from crushed beetles (but NOT carmoisine, which is artificial and ok for veggies). Soft drinks are often, surprisingly, not vegetarian - Lilt isn't, the Beta Carotene in it is stabilised with fish gelatine, for example! (But orange Fanta (in the UK) is fine as they've removed the B.Carotene from that now.) As far as I know Coke and Pepsi are ok. Watch out for beer - almost all handpump ales are not veggie - they're fined with fish extracts. A lot of bottled ales are ok, best to check the label though. Most confectionery is not vegetarian, always check for gelatin or other invaders!Be cautious of meals in pubs & restaurants - thousands of them have meals containing mozzarella or parmesan cheese in, and are marked as vegetarian when they are definitely not. Parmesan is NEVER veggie due to its manufacturing methods!

    Good luck!

  15. yes if you not want to eat meat or meat related.

  16. There are some misleading answers here and I'm particularly struck by those that state vegetarians can't eat anything to do with animals.  Surely the very basis of the vegetarian viewpoint is that no animal has been killed in order to provide a product that is then consumed.

That is the starting point.  It is then up to each and every one of us to decide how far we take our concern for animal welfare.

Perhaps controversially, you can be a vegetarian without having any consideration for animal welfare though of course the grey area exists when one considers whether the lack of welfare has hastened the animal's death.

Again, the issue of 'progressive disengagement' is central to such arguments.

  17. don't forget Carminic Acid, Carmine, Red #4, Cochineal Extract, it all is a coloring extracted from insects.

  18. Quorn is ok to eat.

apart from that dust if it is marked as "free from skin scales".

  19. i used to cook my daughter cheesy mash with sliced tomatoes and cheese on top done in the oven.i reckon she lived off that for 3 years.she also like the linda macartney range.

  20. gelatine always look out for the veggie stamp.

  21. poultry (chicken or turkey or birds of any kind) meat, fish or anything containing animal fats cheese eggs etc.....
