Question:

What CFC's cause ozone depletino today?

There have been acts and agreements to limit, if not end with the output of CFC's and other ozone-depleting substances. But what things are still putting out CFC's or other ODS's?

  1. Chlorofluorocarbons are widely used as the working fluid in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. When signed in 1987, the treaty was considered "progressive and far-sighted" by interest groups such as Ozone Action . Today, however, although 162 countries, representing about 95% of the world’s population, are signatories to it, there is widespread concern that the provisions of the Protocol are insufficient.Since 1987, stratospheric ozone depletion has continued at a steady pace. Last year, the Antarctic ozone hole was unprecedented in both duration and severity of ozone depletion . This year, in the Arctic, the annual minimum stratospheric ozone concentration was 45% below the historical norm based on measurements dating back to the 1950’s. At mid-latitudes, stratospheric ozone concentrations are declining at a rate of about 5% per decade

  2. Although there are acts and agreements like montreal protocol to ban production of ODS but fact is that they are still in use. there are two reasons for that 1. all old machinary using CFC could not be phased out and 2. laws are not strictly enforced.

However there are studies which are showing that the ozone hole is now healing gradually.

Untill and unless we have some scientific proof to deny these theories we are forced to belive on them.

  3. Some air conditioners especially in cars.  There are still unscrupulous manufacturers who still use the same old CFC's that contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. This is the very reason why there is a big "hole" in the Antarctic.

  4. Ozone depletion: 1972 consortium of scientists from three schools (MIT, NMSU, & CalPoly Pomona) want grant to study Ozone Layer. 1973-74 school year grant of $293,000.00 by US Government is enough to build an instrument package but no where near enough to launch it so three separate environmental chambers were used to test Idealized Ozone Layer conditions as suspected by said scientist. Organic Chemistry Professor at NMSU suggested that CFRs and lighting might affect ozone layers......IT DOES in an environmental chamber with the correct ozone CFR ratio within +/- 4 parts per billion and a telsa coil sparking like mad in the chamber. $98,000.00 of the grant money was used to sensationalize the broad outlines of the facts. (Exact ratios and experimental data are propitiatory to the consortium so I can not quote that data.) I still remember the headline Hairspray destroys Ozone Layer. 1975-76 school year said consortium got $23,000,000 dollar grant to study ozone layer. Until that program got started the only thing we knew about the ozone layer is that we were punching rockets through it on a regular basis. Holes in the Ozone Layer No information at all prior to 1977 or 1978 and maybe later than that I quit following the controversy.

How do I know these things? I was a work study student working in the Organic Chemistry Labs at NMSU from 1972-1975.

I did 20 hours per week taking notes and doing observations with about 25 other students so that the data was available when the Professor bothered to look at it. Once we found the ozone depletion ratio of CFR he started writing his conclusions. I asked him and he basically told me these experiments are bogus and that what he was concerned about was getting real money to do the studies at altitude.

You know what? I have not believed a darn thing so called environmental science has said since!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Vapors from petrochemicals both being burned and processed. Very baaaad.!!!!!!!!!!

  6. it is economic war

newer technology ousting the old and tried technology

    Finding replacement markets

  7. The first question I would ask is what is an ozone depleting substance.

The popular theory from the 1990's was that CFC's are a catalyst that depleats ozone and they are the primary cause of ozone depletion.

Given that the atmospheric life of CFC's is over a hundred years and they take 15 years to reach the upper atmosphere (these are from Wikipedia and these are the most conservative numbers I have seen quoted anywhere).  The question is then why has the ozone layer started recovering now and not in 100 years time, I mean the portion of ozone depleting substances in the atmosphere is only dropping by around 1% per year.

It begs the question are CFC's really ozone depleating and if so were they the primary cause of ozone depletion.
