  1. If you mean 1800 - 1899, there were many types of rifles, both in caliber and name (probably too many to mention since almost anyone could make their own until Eli Whitney developed the concept of mass production).

    Actually, almost until the end of the American Civil War, muskets were the most common type of "long weapon" used by both the military and civilians.  For example, the Springfield musket, used in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War was approximately a .58 caliber rifled musket.  Towards the end of the Civil War, the repeating rifle made its appearance (for example, the Henry - The Confederates said it was a weapon you loaded on Sunday and could fire until Thursday).  So too did an early type of machine gun, the Gatling gun, which I believe was around a .58 caliber but I can't say for sure.  It wasn't a true machine gun in that it was really a rapid-firing type of weapon, not like the automatic type machine guns of today.
