Alright here we go again. Bases are loaded with 2 outs. Runner A is on First, Runner B is on Second and Runner C is on Third. The batter hits a shot to the right field corner. It turns out to be an inside the park homerun. (All runners including batter runner score.) The defense makes an appeal that Runner A missed second base and the umpire indeed calls Runner A out on the appeal play for the third out. Which runs should be allowed to score and why? 10 points to the first correct answer!

  1. All three base runners score and the batter is out on the appeal play.  Appeals occur after the play is completed and the runs scored by all three base runners stand.

EDIT:  NY33, take another look at the wording of the rule.  In this case the following runner is the hitter and the preceding runners are the three base runners.  Rule 7.12 is referring to a preceding runner out on an appeal play and stating that the following runner, the hitter, would not score if the preceding runner was the third out on appeal.  The correct answer to this question is as I have stated, all preceding runs score and the following runner is out on appeal.

EDIT:  My mistake. as I read your question again I see that you are referring to the runner on first base (A) an not the hitter.  My response was given based on the hitter missing second base and not the runner on first base missing second base.  ny33 is correct in his response.

  2. B and C should score because theyy both scored before the play was over (the appeal call)

  3. No runs score because the appeal was a force out

  4. No 1

  5. id say the runners on b and c should get the points

  6. C for sure and B if he made it home before A got to second

  7. No runs score - see the last line of the following quote from the official MLB rules:

"7.12.  Unless two are out, the status of a following runner is not affected by a preceding runner’s failure to touch or retouch a base. If, upon appeal, the preceding runner is the third out, no runners following him shall score. If such third out is the result of a force play, neither preceding nor following runners shall score."
