Question:

What Can I Do For My Cockatiels?

We have two parakeets and two cockatiels, our parakeets' wings are clipped and they are fine, they can hop and glide for short distances without any problem. But our cockatiels are the problem. The lady that sold us gave us nice birds, and she clipped the wings for us, but she butchered them! They were cut un-evenly, and if the birds try to glide, they crash! What can I do to even them out? None of the people in my family know how to clip wings, and I'm NOT letting the lady we got them from do it again! What should I do?

  1. Go to a different Vet.

  2. You really can't "fix" a bad clip. The birds will eventually get used to what they can't and can do, and will stop "crashing". Just make sure there are soft things for them to land on (I keep old quilts around my birds' perching stands and cage when they're clipped). When the badly clipped feathers molt out and new ones regrow, go have them clipped by someone who knows what they're doing. Most vets can do it, and some pet stores MAY have people working there that know how.

  3. Hello.

You can type in the word trim wings in the net, and there are several websites that would show you how . I usually do free for my customers ( I am a breeder ) but at the pet stores, the store owners would do it for you ( they charge $ 10 as I know ) . If you don't or can't do it , the wings will grow back and you can let your bird fly better. TM.
