  1. My favorite horse & rider costume has always been Renaissance. There are so many options, and much of it is easy to make yourself.

Fantasy movies are good for references; try watching A Knight's Tale, or Ever After for some costume pictures.

  2. It depends on the class....all the costume classes ive been in, you have to wear a helmet, boots, have a bridle on the horse (novice riders must have a saddle or bareback pad) and you are mounted....but it really does depend...I have dressed up as a Vegas Show Girl, A Victorian Princess, and a Hula Dancer ( i know...hula..how creative right lol i got lazy!!) My sister went as tinkerbell! it was cute!

    Whoops! Sorry!

Okay for the Show Girls thing, my horse has a pink stable sheet for before shows ( I got it washed) and I stitched on feather boas & got those stick-on gems from the craft store & stuck them all over in cool patterns, then I took feather boas (i used a lot of these) and taped them to her sport boots, and i used twinkle toes on her hooves & used orange non-toxic paint to give her eye-shadow (on top of her eyes of course in like HUGE arcs...then I got coloured hair wigs & snap-clipped them into her mane & tail & forelock, and I used glitter hair spray all over her & I put this wild flowery hair clip I found in her forelock as a ''head-dress'' and for me, I got a neon pink dress (with a big skirt part) from a 2nd hand shop, and used spray glue & loose glitter & covered it in sparkles & then I taped a head-dress like thing to my helmet & put body glitter all over my arms & my face & in my hair, and it was SO much fun!! (PS: She got a good bath when we got home!)

For the victorian princess, I borrowed a costume from a friend..sorry!

For the Hula Dancer, I bought plastic hula skirts from the Dollar Store & attached them together, so they would fit around my horse, then we put strings to either side of her skirt over her withers & rump so they would stay up, I got her a cocobut bra & put it on her breast collar, I put leis on her sport boots, over her neck, I took the flowers off a couple leis & taped them on her bridle, and put them in her mane ( I washed it & put mousse in it to curl it the night before) and i put a couple leis in her tail, I put a shell bra on over my show shirt, and i put a bunch of leis on & taped them to my helmet & again, so much fun!!

    Good Luck!

  3. Could you ride in as an Native American, like Pocahontas.

I think that would be so beautiful. A War Paint on the side of your Horse, and you dressed in a pretty white fringe Indian outfit!

  4. Hi there

Yes you'll be expected to ride the horse.

Themes: Day at the beach; tied bucket, spade, swim ring etc to horse, rider in togs etc

Knight; fancy saddle blanket made from bright cloth, added tassles, covered reins, paper rubish bag (cut out arm holes and head hole decorate by drawing a coat of arms or dragon and spray with some gold paint, some bright fake jewel chains etc...

Ski bunny: rider wears ski suit, boots, carries poles, horse with leggings, wooly hat, scarf etc.

Octopus: bright coloured sea material and large amount to cover the horse, rider wears a bright blue shirt, red pantyhose over arms, sew another six stocking arms onto t-shirt and stuff with news paper, put red pantyhose over helmet and can cover face and still be see through.

Xmas box: rider wears bright coloured tights over jods and boots ie red, get a large cardboard box, cover in wrapping paper, cut a hole in top for head and side for arms, wrap in a big bow, on the horse put bows and ribons around face neck etc (use ribbon that has the wire in it and it sits nicely off eyes for the horse).

Lady bird: large sheet of bright red glossy fabric (vinyl) use a black permanent maker to draw large black dots all over. Dress rider in green, and on the hat make a flower ( make a wide strip of card to go around the had, cut out large petals that will be attached to strip around the had - staple these on - use bright coloured card, then make ssmaller petals that go inside large petals and attach these (that will stop the petals falling down over your face) go to the craft shop and you may find some little lady bird clips to clip on the flower, then get some thick pipe cleaners in bright red to attach to the bridle and put some black pom poms on the top for lady bird antenae.

Or maybe a take off of a famous person who has done some thing natorious, I once saw a dressage test done by Sara Ferguson the rider had on a bright red flowing wig and fake b***s hanging out riden to Royal Britania, very funny.

Best of luck, hope this prompts some ideas. Just pick a theme then think how you can addapt it. Horses covered in large sheets of material make a good show. Have fun :)
