  1. (Typical American answer above)

    Now THESE are economical;

    The Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion & Seat Ibiza Ecomotion (pretty much the same car), both 1.4TDi, are both in band A & so are road tax free. They are also the most economical new cars in Britain, averaging 74mpg.

  2. if wherever you live they have LPG cars then any LPG running car is 100% non pollutant, so your choice would be very vast.

    People posting MPG numbers are missing the point as LPG costs a third so any 50MPG LPG running car would equate to a 150mpg diesel or Petrol car with the big different that LPG cars pollute as much as a home gas burning kitchen.

  3. These 4 cars give you among the best fuel economy in city & highway driving conditions, with lower emissions & cost of ownership:

    1. Toyota Prius @ 48 mpg (most fuel efficient overall)

    2. Mazda MX-5 @ 22 mpg city / 28 mpg highway (fuel efficient two-seater)

    3. Toyota Yaris @ 29 mpg city / 36 mpg highway (fuel efficient sub-compact car)

    4. Honda Civic Hybrid @ 40 mpg city / 45 mpg highway (most efficient compact car)

    Most of the fuel economy benefits depend on how you drive as well. Using cruise control, avoiding overloading your car, maintaining proper tire pressure are sure ways to increase gas mileage.
