My roomie is still hunting for a car she despritely needs for student teaching. She was about to get a Ford Focus until she read about how bad the brakes were.

What is a good car for her that is cheap and good on miles per gallon of gas?

She is also a string player and will probably need enough room for a double bass (so big trunk and option of back seats folding down to extend the trunk would be nice)

  2. Nissan Versa, Honda Fit, Hyundai Elantra, Chevy Aveo5, all are hatchbacks and would give lots of room to put instruments.

  3. There are Numerous Used Honda's that would be you most bulletproof way to go for that price....some even will be Honda Certified Pre-Owned which comes with an awesome warranty.

Look for 01 to 04 Accords for the most car for the money!

(MPG's are 32-35 on those too!)

  4. Hands down: Nissan Versa Hatchback. (with the CVT , not regular 4-speed automatic) It has the lowest true 5-year cost to own per Edmunds.com. I get 34 mpg in mine on the interstate, and about  26-27  in town. A great possible alternative would be a used Jetta TDI wagon. 52 mpg! Forget a Jetta with any other engine besides the diesel, though. They have terrible reliability.
