I was walking outside and noticed a massive increase in moth activity. There were literally clouds of moths flying near the bright lights. I took the same walk at the same time last week, and there were not nearly as many moths. What can be causing this.

  1. Many insects respond to weather and plant growth.  Their life cycle follows the season, so they appear, sometimes in huge numbers, at a given time each year.  Thats why we have June bugs, Mayflies and so on.  Many species of moths feed on young plant growth.  As spring goes into summer the plants harden their leaves to the coming heat of summer.  The caterpillars drop off the leaves spin their cocoons and metamorphose into moths and butterflies.  They emerge at about the same time so they can mate and lay their eggs for the next generation, usually the following year.   This is a very broad generalization of how it works.

  2. you have seen moths which were there  for reproduction and then they die of after oviposition (egg laying) the life of moth is limited the catterpillar larvae of moth will live now for long period of time and then they will undergo metamorphosis to moth after hatching from eggs  so there will be a gap of few days to a month you will again see them in high number

  3. They like light.
