Question:

What Childcare help could I get for a Part-Time PGCE course?

I'm doing a part time PGCE in September (post-16 education). I need to know what childcare I could access for my 17 month old son. The college has a creche, although it is only open until 4.15pm every day and my course runs 1-7pm (one day a week).

I have no family or friends nearby who would be able to look after him.

Would I be eligible for any help with childcare? The Creche manager said I would get a childcare grant but these are (apparently) only available to full-time students.

We are in receipt of working tax credit as my partner is on a low income and I work part time. Would we be able to claim childcare fees from the WTC for me to do my course?

  1. Some universities and colleges also offer student hardship monies, which may be able to help. Some forward thinking Higher Education Institutions also offer specific grants for child care that are means tested.

Contact you Student Services (should have details on the college/uni website) and arrange an appointment with the student finance adviser
