It  is used to describe a period in European History. It used to be called the Dark Ages because it was before the Reformation and people hadn't the benefit of the Protestant religion, and were thought to be under the wrong headed influence of the Catholic Church. Since this is not a particularly politically correct notion, it was changed to the Middle Ages.
