  1. Anaerobic respiration in muscles/animal cells. The pyruvic acid is not completely broken down in anaerobic respiration and builds up lactic acid in muscles causing 'muscle fatigue'.

    Under aerobic conditions the pyruvate enters Kreb's cycle followed by the hydrogen transfer chain and is converted to carbon dioxide and water
