I'm doing some dance competitions, and me and my mum are wondering what I should wear. The Song is 'Put on a Happy Face' in the musical 'Bye Bye Birdie'. The competitions are in October, but we need to show my dance teacher before the end of September. Any help??

  1. You might try wearing something a bit 50's but easy to move around in, if you're planning on doing things like splits, high kicks, etc.  Happy colors like yellow, light blue, pink, green, etc. are good.

  2. I've found that judges like it when costume are reminiscent of the original performance.  Meaning, go watch Bye Bye Birdie, and see what the singer is wearing.  Get as close to that as possible.

  3. hmm, it seems a popular thing to wear right now is a short dress with short shorts under neath.I would  wear a bright color like yellow or bright blue, they seem happy to me. I hope you do well at competition!

  5. I'm not sure what you mean - do you make your own competition costumes?  We always have ours made by the studio.

If you do make your own, I'm not sure this would be possible, but here is how I imagine it.  First, a white short sleeved leotard with a sort of puffy sleeve.  On top of that, a high waisted skirt - pale coloured fabric (maybe with a sort of checkered fabric, I'm thinking blue or yellow) on top of several layers of tulle, that reaches around your knees.  Lastly, a bandanna tied and knotted around your neck that matches the skirt.  Wear your hair in a low ponytail, add your dance shoes, and you're perfect!

I found a website with pictures of Bye Bye Birdie costumes.  The bottom 2 pictures have girls wearing costumes very similar to what I'm imagining.  They also show poodle skirts, which I didn't think of.

    Hope this helps!
