Question:

What Could Cause These CAR Symptoms ...?

When it starts to go at a certain speed (say, 60mph), there is a nasty odor. It's not exactly smoke ... the closest I can describe it is fumes. Since carbon monoxide is supposed to be odorless, I'd guess that's not the problem. Anyways, the closer it gets to 65mph, the more the fumes - or whatever it is - starts stinging my eyes.

We just paid $2100 for a new transmission, about $150 (supposedly) for a tune-up (which is questionable, since another mechanic later said that he'd bet the spark plugs hadn't been changed), and about $300 for the front brakes & rotor, and the stabilizer bar. Now, the A/C is running hot ... but it's gonna take a load of money to figure out what's wrong with THAT!

The mechanic suggests that we pay for $40 worth of freon so that he can put it in ... but what's the point of that, if that's not the real problem? He'll charge, of course, to check it out and tell us what the problem is.

  1. They took the money, go demand they determined what the burning is..your right this could something serious.  The squeaky wheel gets the grease.--be a pain in the ***.  could be trans fluid leaking on exhaust pipe. the stinging of eyes is exaust fumes entering the car ,it alway does that. no dought about it. the exhaust is not oderless.   also if they did a lousy tune up you could be running rich which really puts out a lot of  exhaust and burning eyes..again the burning eyes is the exhaust. if you are running rich you will also use a lot of fuel.

  2. try driving without your a/c on and see if the symptoms continue. the pump might be burning up. the best way to check that is to take the a/c pump belt off but its probably not possible because its on a single serpintine.

  3. Sounds like an exhaust leak to me. No hint as to what you are driving so can't help much
