  1. The UN's role during South Africa's Apartheid government was to put pressure on that government by executing economic sanctions against South Africa, thus hurting the economy. These sanctions were not very effective as South Africa's trading partners were largely against this.

  3. the first mandatory trade embargo ever against a memberstate. It started as a voluntary (and thus ineffective) arms embargo in 1963; by 1977 it became mandatory. I think it was 1979 when they expanded it beyond weaponry.

    probably nothing. they don't do much unless it involves western countries. or will have a negative affect on the west.

    (hence the fact that they aren't doing anything about the South Ossetian war right now)
