  1. The best is Canon EOS 40D

  2. The camera body is not the only thing that determines image quality. The lens has just as much effect on the image quality as the body. The kit lenses that come with the Canon rebels (350d,350d)  leave quite a bit to be desired, and although the kit lens with the 40d (the 17-85mm) is hardly perfect, it is considerably better than the rebels lens (the 18-55mm). As such, because price doesn't matter, I'd go with the 40d. That being said, if price REALLY doesn't matter to you, get your sister a Canon 1ds mark III with a 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 l series lens. she'll love you forever then.

    Hope this helps!

  3. the lens quality is more important than the other features, get the best lens you can and the 40D.

  4. I highly recommend Canon XTi(400D). It offers the same pro features that you would find in high end Canon/Nikon cameras. Most photographers will tell you that lenses are more important than Cameras. You can buy a Canon XTi with a kit lens for around $550 and save your money to buy extra lens or external flash. Most people spend most of their budget on the camera body. Built in flash and kit lenses do not produce acceptable results.

The Rebel XTi is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup so you can mount high end lenses like L series on XTi. You can also mount any Canon flashes such as the great 580ex II on XTi.

You can find plenty of great deals on ebay:

If your budget is like $1000, I would buy the XTi which is around $550 with a kit lens and spend the rest of your money on a gift card from a camera store. That way, she can either buy extra lens or flash or take phtography lessons. Most of the photographers spend most of their money on lenses, flashes and etc.

    Good luck!
